Computer Glossary - S

Shareware
Shareware is a marketing method for computer software. Shareware software is typically obtained free of charge, often by downloading from the Internet or on magazine cover-disks. A user tries out the program, and thus shareware has also been known as "try before you buy". A shareware program is accompanied by a request for payment, and the software's distribution license often requires such a payment.

Shell Extention
It is sometimes referred to as the Windows GUI shell, or simply "Explorer".

Shortcuts
Computer shortcuts are small files containing only the location of another file, and sometimes specific parameters to be passed to it when run. They are commonly placed on the desktop, start menu, and taskbar of various operating systems, and may only work from the GUI and not from the command line.

Spyware
Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent. While the term spyware suggests software that secretly monitors the user's behavior, the functions of spyware extend well beyond simple monitoring. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party.

Startup Process
The Windows Startup Process is the process by which Microsoft's Windows series of operating systems initializes

Stealware
Stealware refers to a type of software that effectively transfers money owed to a website owner to a third party.
