Yet another round of spam e-mails that instructs recipients to click on a link that downloads a virus is making the rounds. This time the e-mails include a link that contains an article about the FBI and the popular social networking site, Facebook.
The FBI is following reports of recent spam e-mails spreading the Storm Worm software, also known as malware. The e-mails, which are titled FBI vs. Facebook, ask the user to click on a link to view and article about the bureau and the popular social networking Web site.
The subject line reads “FBI wants instant access to Facebook.”
Once the email is opened, the recipient is asked to click on a link to view an article about the FBI and Facebook. Once the user clicks on the link, the Storm Worm malware is downloaded to the Internet-connected device, causing it to become infected with the virus and part of the Storm Worm botnet.
“The spammers spreading this virus are preying on Internet users and making their computers an unwitting part of criminal activity, ” said FBI Special Agent Richard Kolko of the FBI.
