It is a free Microsoft program that protects your computer against spyware, adware, pop-ups and all the usual web nasties. It offers scanning for harmful items as well as real-time protection. The real-time monitoring alerts against threats and recommends actions.
Is Windows Defender Any Good?
Overall we think its a pretty good product. Our rating is about 7/10. As with most anti-spyware products, it will detect most but not all. After removing some items, you will see them return again.
The real-time monitoring is pretty good and we liked that feature, as well as the pop-up blocker. However, if you are expecting an all-in-one solution then you probably won’t be overly satisfied. There were also some known conflicts with other security products such as Trend Micro PC-cillin.
The best solution is to use Windows Defender in conjuction with other security products (such as Anti-Virus PLUS). This is always the best approach for securing against malware and viruses. However, Windows Defender is FREE, so give it a try. It is a decent product.
